Piar-theagasc sa mhata // Peer-tutoring in maths

Piar-Theagasc (2)

Tá múinteoir iontach a oibríonn liom a rinneadh cúrsa ar an bpiar-theagasc agus na buntáistí a bhaineann leis i gcás an fhadhbréiteach sa mhata. Deirtear ar an gcúrsa go mbíonn feabhas iontach ar scileanna fadhbréiteacha na bpáistí chomh maith le hardú suntasach ar na scóranna caighdeánacha, agus an phróiséas seo in úsáid. D’úsáid sé lena rang féin anuraidh é (Rang a 5 a bhí aige) agus, creid nó ná creid, d’ardaigh na scóranna STEN sa mhata i gcás gach páiste sa rang seachas duine amháin. Mar thoradh, tá an piar-theagasc in úsáid i ngach seomra ranga sa scoil i mbliana – ó Rang 2-6.

There’s an excellent teacher working with me who did a course on peer-tutoring and the advantages of its use for problem-solving in maths. It was said on the course that it brought about major improvements in the children’s problem-solving skills as well as significant improvements in the standardised test scores. He used the process with his own class last year (it was 5th class) and, believe it or not, every child in the class, bar one, increased their STEN score in maths. As a result, peer-tutoring is now being used from 2nd – 6th class throughout our school.

Céard atá i gceist leis? // What’s involved?

Déantar uair amháin in aghaidh na seachtaine é. It’s done once a week.

Maireann gach seisiún uair an chloig. Go pearsanta déanaim ar an Aoine é, ó 11.00 – 12.00, idir an dá sos. Each session lasts one hour. I personally do it on a Friday, from 11.00 – 12.00, between the two breaks.

Ní mór na páistí a chur i mbeirteanna de réir chumais matamaitice – páistí ar an gcumas céanna ag obair lena chéile. Úsáidim na scóranna STEN is déanaí chun seo a dhéanamh. Fanann siad leis an bpairtnéir céanna i gcónaí. You need to put the children in pairs according to mathematical ability – children of the same ability working together. I use the most recent STEN scores to do this. They then stay with that same partner each week.

Is teagascóir duine amháin ón mbeirt, as teagascaí an duine eile. Malartaíonn na rólanna seo gach seisiún, ach bíonn aon ról amháin acu i gcomhair aon seisiún amháin. One of the two is the ‘teacher’ and the other is the ‘learner’. They switch these roles each session but keep to just one role for one full session.

Ag leanúint an phróiséis atá ar an mbileog sa ghriangraf thuas, cuireann an teagascóir na ceisteanna ar an dteagascaí. Léann siad an cheist le chéile os ard, fiosraíonn siad cén cineál ceiste atá ann agus an bhfuil bealaí eile gur féidir é a chur. Labhraíonn siad faoin t-eolas atá ar eolas acu cheanna féin agus céard atá le fáil amach. Following the process laid out on the page in the above picture, the ‘teacher’ asks questions of the ‘learner’. They read the question together out loud, they figure out what type of question it is and whether there are other ways it could be asked. The speak about the information that they have already and what it is they are trying to find out.

Iarann an teagascóir ar an dteagascaí pictiúr a tharraingt agus ansin an mata a dhéanamh agus iad ag labhairt amach os ard agus iad á dhéanamh. Agus é críochnaithe, bíonn ar an dteagascaí míniú a thabhairt ar an gcaoi gur tháinig siad ar an bhfreagra agus ansin nasc simplí a dhéanamh lena saoil féin. The ‘teacher’ asks the ‘learner to draw a picture and then to do the maths while talking through it aloud. When it’s done, the learner is prompted to explain how they got their answer and to make a simple link with their own lives.

Toisc go bhfuil na beirteanna éagsúla ar chumas difriúla óna chéile gheobhaidh cuid acu níos mó déanta san uair an chloig ná cuid eile acu. I gcás mo Rang 6 féin – is idir 5 – 15 fadhbanna focail a fhaigheann siad déanta. An rud is fearr faoin bpróiséis ná go mbíonn orthu moilliú síos agus a gcuid ama a thógáil leis. Because the various pairs are at different levels of ability, some will get more done than others in the hour. In the case of my own 6th class, they get between 5 – 15 word problems done. The best thing about the process is that it makes them slow down and take their time.

Baineann na páistí an sult as seo agus eitlíonn an uair an chloig. Seo cúpla griangraf de mo rang féin ag tabhairt faoi. The children really enjoy this and the hour flies by. Here are a few photos of my own class mid-process.

Má tá siad uait, tá na hacmhainní atá de dhíth (treoracha don mhúinteoir agus na leathanaigh a bhíonn ag an dteagascóir) déanta amach agam agus tá siad ar fáil anseo. If you would like them, I’ve put toghether the resources needed (teacher instructions and the sheets needed by the ‘teacher’) and they are available here.

Sracamharc ar mo sheomra ranga // A Glance around my classroom

Seo an chaoi go bhfuil rudaí leagtha amach agam i mbliana le haghaidh Rang 6. Tosóidh mé le 4 phictiúr a ghlac mé ó na cúinní sa seomra agus beidh ansin na rudaí beaga 🙂

This is how I have things laid out this year for 6th class. I’ll start with 4 pictures taken from the corners of the room and then show you the smaller things 🙂

This is my reading corner 🙂 A couple of nice chairs looking in on the library shelves.

2015-08-28 16.10.40Seo cuid de na taispeántais atá tosaithe agam – ach cinnte beidh níos mó le dul suas i rith na míosa seo! Tús maith leath na hoibre a deirtear, nach ea?

Here’s a few of the displays that I’ve started with – obviously there’ll be more to come over the course of the first month! A good start’s half the job – isn’t that what they say?

Seo an spás ghrúpa atá agam. Bíonn seo in úsáid agam chun an léitheoireacht a chloisteáil, grúpa ag an am. Bíonn sé in úsáid go minic le linn na stáisiúin agus más rud é go bhfuil grúpa á thógáil ar taobh agam chun tacaíocht breise a thabhairt dóibh ag am mata. Tá go leor acmhainní ar na seilfeanna anseo chomh maith.

This is my group space. I use this space to hear the children reading, one group at a time. It’s often used during stations and  also if I’m taking a group to one side to give them extra support during maths. There’s also lots of supplies stored on the shelves in this area.

Seo an stáisiún eagraíochta atá agam. Bíonn filteáin ag gach páiste, ina choiníonn siad a gcuid oibre go léir, bileoga oibre, cóipeanna, srl. Tá stápléirí, pollairí agus gliú ann ionas go mbeadh rudaí in ord agus in eagar.

This is my organisation station. Each child has a folder, in which they keep all of their work, worksheets, photocopies, etc. Theres staplers, hole punches and glue there so that things stay organised.

Seo an áit go mbeidh na téacsleabhair uilig nuair a thógann na páistí isteach ar an Luan iad. Beidh na cóipleabhair á choinneáil sna trádairí ar bharr.

This is where all of the textbooks will be stored when the children bring them in on Monday. The copies will be kept in the trays on the top.

2015-08-28 16.13.36

Mar is eol daoibh uilig, tá go leor pleanála déanta agam le haghaidh na stáisiúin. Is sa chófra seo go mbeach na hacmhainní uilig á stóráil agus nuair atá na stáisiúin ar siúl beidh na treoracha agus pé rud atá de dhíth uaidh gach grúpa cutha sna boscaí agam ar maidin ionas nach mbeidh le déanamh ach na boscaí a thabhairt amach. Éasca!

As you are all aware by now, I’ve done lots of planning for station teaching. It’s in this cupboard that I’ll be storing all of those resources and then when stations are happening  I’ll put the instructions and materials required for each station in the boxes that morning so that all that will be required is to hand out the boxes. Easy!

This is my whiteboard good to go. The sections for homeword, focal an lae, word of the day and the date stay always in the same place.

Sin é! Súil agam gur maith libh é agus b’fhéidir go mbeadh inspioráid le fáil ann ag duine éigean. Le bhur dtoil, má tá pictiúir agaibh de bhur seomraí ranga go mbeadh suim ag ár léitheoirí iontu, bígí cinnte iad a roinnt linn 🙂

That’s it! I hope you like it and that maybe somebody will get some kind of inspiration from it. Please share any photos you have of your classroom’s that you think readers might like 🙂

‘Seanfhocal na Seachtaine’ & ‘Quote of the Week’

Seanfhocal na SeachtaineQuote of the Week - English

Seo rud bheag a dhéanaim gach uile seachtain ar scoil agus feicim go gcuireann sé go mór le saol an seomra ranga i go leor bealaí éagsúla. Ag tús na seactaine bíonn seanfhocal nua, as Gaeilge, agus quote nua, as Béarla, á chrochadh agam. Labhraíonn muid faoin dá rud maidin Dé Luain, míníonn muid céard atá i gceist leo, bíonn plé againn ar an duine a dúirt, nó ar an stair atá taobh thiar de. Cuidíonn na seanfhocail go mór le Gaeilge na bpáistí, sa chaint, sa scríbhneoireacht, ó thaobh chultúr an teanga de, ó thaobh staire de agus baineann siad sult as úsáid a bhaint astu i rith na seachtaine. (Tugaim pointí ClassDojo dóibh más féidir iad a úsáid!!) I gcás na cinn as Béarla, bíonn siad spreagúil go nádúrtha agus faigheann na páistí muinín astu – i ngan fhios daoibh féin. Chomh maith le sin, is bealach deas, nádúrtha é na daoine a dúirt, a chur in iúl dóibh – údair, polaiteoirí cáilúila, ceannairí domhanda, filí, aisteoirí, is ar uile. Nós simplí agus éasca atá cabhrach gan dabht agus a chuireann leis an seomra ranga ag an am céanna. Tá sampla nó dhó thíos agus is féidir clicéail ar na híomhánna thuas le dul ag mo shiopa TpT chun iad a cheannach, má tá suim agat.

This is a little thing that I do every week at school and I see that it adds largely to classroom life in lots of ways. At the beginning of the week I hang a new seanfhocal (Irish proverb) and a new quote, in English. We speak about the two things every Monday morning, we explain what they mean, we discuss the person who said the quote and the history behind them. The proverbs really help the children with their Irish, both spoken and written, in terms of the culture of the language and from a historical point of view. The children enjoy using them whenever they can throughout the week. (I give them ClassDojo points if they can include them during the week!!). The Quote of the Week is always motivational by nature and the children gain encouragement and confidence from them – without even realising it. As well as that, it’s a lovely, natural way to introduce them to the various people who spoke the words – authors, famous politicians, world leaders, poets, actors, and more. Overall, this a simple and effective weekly routine and the nice colourful posters add to the classroom at the same time. There’s a couple of examples below and you can click on the images at the top to go to my TpT store where you can purchase them, if you’re interested.
