Cluiche na dTáblaí // Tables Game

2016-01-19 10.27.54

Seo cluiche deas éasca gur féidir a imirt i mbeirteanna chun cleachtadh a dhéanamh ar na táblaí. Níl rud ar bith de dhíth seachas cártaí imeartha – fuair mé na cinn seo (as Gaeilge) saor in aisce ó Fhoras na Gaeilge. Tá sé an simplí : Bíonn na páistí i mbeirteanna de réir chumais agus bíonn leath an phacáiste cártaí ag gach páiste agus iad i mbeart ar an mbord acu. Casann siad ceann amháin an duine ag an am céanna. Más 3 agus 7 atá os a gcomhair, mar shampla, deireann siad 21. An chéad duine leis an bhfreagra a bhuann an dá cárta sin. An duine leis an méad is mó cárta ag an deireadh a bhuann an cluiche. D’úsáid muidne do na táblaí iolraithe é le déanaí ach d’fhéadfá suimiú, dealú nó roinnt a dhéanamh leis ach oiread.

This is a nice easy  game to play in pairs to practice their tables. You don’t need anything other than some packets of playing cards – I got these Irish language ones free from Foras na Gaeilge. It’s really simple : The children are in pairs according to ability and each child has half of the packet of cards in a pile on the table. They each turn over one card at the same time. If a 3 and a 7 are shown, for example, they say 21. The first to have the answer wins the two cards. The person with the most cards at the end wins the game. We used it for the multiplication tables recently but you could work on addition, subtraction or division in the same way.

‘Speed-Dating’ Matamaitice

2016-02-01 10.23.58

Bíonn ‘speed-dating’ ar siúl againn sa mhata go minic. Is bealach iontach é seo chun druileanna agus cleachtadh a dhéanamh ar scileanna áirithe nó, dár ndóigh, chun dul siar a dhéanamh. Tá níos mó obair ghníomhach i gceist leis ná leathanaigh ón dtéacsleabhar a chríochniú agus foghlaim níos doimhne agus níos fearr ar siúl chomh maith.  Seo mar a oibríonn sé.

We do ‘speed-dating’ in maths very often. It’s a great way to practice and to drill on certain skills or, indeed, to review and assess topics. This is much more active than completing pages from the textbook and also results in deeper understanding and better learning. Here’s how it works.

Bíonn clár bán beag ag gach páiste. (Is féidir páipéar lánaithe a úsáid muna bhfuil cláracha bána agat). Suíonn siad i mbeirteanna, ag breathnú ar a chéile. Roinntear an clár bán ina dhá leath. Ansin leanann siad an próiséas seo – tógann gach ceist 8 nóiméad. Bogann duine amháin as gach beirt ar aghaidh go páirtnéir nua i ndiaidh gach ceist.

Each child has a mini whiteboard. (You can use laminated paper if you don’t have mini whiteboards). They sit facing each other in pairs. They draw a line down the centre and split the whiteboard in two halves. Then they follow the process below – each question takes 8 minutes. One from each pair moves to a new partner after each question.

Nóim / Min 1 – 2  :   Faigheann siad dhá nóiméad an cheist a dhéanamh go neamhspleách ar dtús, gan labhairt l’éinne eile. Déanann siad seo ar thaobh amháin den chlár bán. They get two minutes to attempt the question independantly at first, without conferring with anybody else. They do this on one side of the whiteboard.

Nóim / Min 3 – 4  :   Ansin, bíonn dhá nóiméad acu labhairt lena ‘date’ faoi, le feiceáil an bhfuil sé déanta sa bhealach céanna acu agus an bhfuil an freagra céanna faighte acu. They then get two minutes to discuss it with their ‘date, to see did they attempt it the same way, and did they get the same answer.

Nóim / Min 5 – 6  :   Déanann an múinteoir os comhair an ranga é agus breacann siad síos an freagra ceart ar an taobh eile den chlár bán. (Feicfidh sibh sna griangrafanna go gcuireann mo rang ‘Mise’ agus ‘Múinteoir’ ar an dá taobh). The teacher does it in front of the class and they take down the correct answer on the other side of their whiteboard. (You’ll see from the photos that my class put ‘Mise’ and ‘Múinteoir’ on either side).

Nóim / Min 7 -8  :   Don dá nóiméad deirneach, labhrann siad le chéile arís ag déanamh comparáide idir an rud a rinne siad féin agus an rud a rinne a múinteoir. Cuireann siad ciorcal timpeall ar aon botúin atá déanta acu, go bhfeicidís an bhfuil na botúin céanna á dhéanamh go minic acu. For the final two minutes, the speak to their partners again and compare what they’ve done with what the teacher has done. They circle any mistakes they’ve made so that they can see if they’re making the same mistakes on a regular basis.

Seo cúpla griangraf dúinn á úsáid chun cleachtadh a dhéanamh ar an roinnt fhada, ach d’fhéadfá é a úsáid le scileanna éagsúla agus le gach aoisghrúpa. Bainigí sult as!

This is a few photos of us using it to practice our long division but you can use it to practice various different skills and with any age group. Enjoy it!
