Póstáil na Nollag / Christmas Tag

A chairde,
nollaig
Buíochas le Emer ag A Crucial Week as ucht mé a lua don phóstáil seo. Ní minic go mbím ag tabhairt faoi aon rud pearsanta anseo – ach seo daoibh. Thanks to Emer at A Crucial Week for tagging me in this Christmas Tag. It’s not often I share any personal info here – but here you go.

1. Cén scannán Nollag is fearr leat? / What’s your favourite Christmas movie?

Braitheann sé – is breá liom go leor acu. Cé go bhfuil siad ar fad difriúil óna chéile, is breá liom Home Alone, Miracle on 34th Street, The Holiday, It’s a Wonderful Life and Love Actually. Ní féidir liom rogha a dhéanamh.

It depends – I love lots of them. Although they’re all very different, I love Home Alone, Miracle on 34th Street, The Holiday, It’s a Wonderful Life and Love Actually. I can’t choose.
2. An osclaíonn tú do bhronntanais Oíche Nollag nó Lá Nollag? / Do you open your presents on Christmas Eve or Christmas morning?

I gcónaí Lá Nollag – bheadh caimiléireacht i gceist le rud ar bith eile!!

Always on Christmas morning – anything else would be cheating!!
3. An bhfuil cuimhne Nollag agat gur fearr leat? / Do you have a favourite Christmas memory?

Bhí an t-ádh liom go raibh an Nollaig i gcónaí go hiontach dom agus mar sin is deacair an rud é cuimhne a phiocadh amach. Tá aintín agam a chónaíonn san Astráil le blianta fada anuas agus bhí i gcónaí bosca mór gach Nollaig agus é lán le bronntanais. Bhaineamar i gcónaí an-sult as sin, mar pháistí.

I’ve been lucky that Christmas has always been a happy affair and so it’s difficult to pick a stand-out memory. I have an aunt who has lived in Australia for years and there was always a huge box every year at Christmas, full of presents. We always really enjoyed that, as kids.
4. Cén bia Nollag is fearr leat? / Favourite festive food?

Idir an liamhás, na bachlóga Bruiséile agus an t-anlann mónóg. Ó – agus na píoga mionra!!

It’s between the ham, the Brussels sprouts, and the cranberry sauce. Oh – and the mince pies!!
5. An bronntanas Nollag is fearr a fuair tú? / Favourite Christmas gift?

Bhí bliain amháin go bfhuair mé Teach Bábóga a bhí lámhdéanta ag m’athair. Bhí sé mór milteach, ocht seomra ann, lán le troscán álainn déanta as adhmaid, pianó beag a bhí in ann ceol a sheinnt, cuirtíní ar na fuinneoga a dhúnadh le velcro, soilse leictreacha a d’obair i gceart. Tá sé fós agam agus tá súil agam go mbeidh seans agam é a thabhairt do mo pháiste féin lá éigean.

One year, I got a Doll’s House that my Dad had made. It was huge, had eight rooms, was filled with beautiful wooden minature furniture, a small piano which could play music, curtains on the windows which little velcro tie backs, electric lights that really worked. I still have it and I hope I’ll have the chance to give it to my own child one day.
6. An boladh Nollag is fearr leat?  Favourite Christmas scent?

An chrann Nollag nó píoga mionra mo mhaim san oighean.

The Christmas tree or my mum’s mince pies in the oven.
7. An bhfuil aon traidisiúin agat Oíche Nollag? / Do you have any Christmas Eve traditions?

Téann muid i gcónaí ar dtús ag an Aifreann as Gaeilge Oíche Nollag i gColáiste Ollscoile Bhaile Átha Cliath. I ndiaidh sin, tugann muid cuairt ar chlann eile go bhfuil muid an-cháirdiúil leo agus bíonn cúpla G&Ts againn. Thosaigh an traidisiúin seo nuair a bhí na páistí an-óg agus na daoine fásta amháin a bhí i gceist, ach anois tá an páiste is óige 27 agus bíonn muid ar fad ann. Is oíche álainn i gcónaí a bhíonn ann.

We go first to mass (as Gaeilge) on Christmas Eve in UCD. After that, we visit another family who we are really close to and have a few lovely G&Ts. It’s a tradition that started years ago when us kids were all very young and it was just the adults that did it. But now the baby is 27 and we all go. It’s always a lovely night.
8. Céard a bhíonn ar bharr do chrann? / What tops your tree?

Bíonn aingeal ar bharr mo cheann. Níl sé curtha suas go fóill (b’fhéidir inniu??) agus mar sin ní féidir liom í a thaispeáint daoibh.

There’s always an angel on top of mine. It’s not up yet (maybe today??) so I can’t show her to you.
9. Mar pháiste, céard é an t-aon rud a bhí á iarraidh agat, nach bhfuair tú? / As a kid, what was the one gift you asked for but never received?

Ní féidir liom smaoineamh ar rud ar bith……nach bhfuil an t-ádh liom?

I can’t think of a single thing…….amn’t I lucky?
10. Céard é an chuid is fearr den Nollaig duitse? / What’s the best part about Christmas for you?

Is breá liom go mbíonn gach duine le chéile, gan aon leithscéalta. Gach maidin Nollag, fiú agus muid fásta suas, suíonn muid timpeall ag oscailt bronntanais, fiú roimh ghléasadh agus Handel’s Messiah ar siúl sa chúlra. Mothaím i gcónaí an-síochánta ag an am sin.

I love that everybody is together, no excuses. Every Christmas morning, even now that we’re all grown up, we sit around opening presents, before even dressing and Handel’s Messiah is always playing in the background. I always feel really peaceful at that time.
