Ag tús na míosa seo, thug mé tionscnaimh do na páistí i mo rang. Is tionscnamh ar chontaetha na hÉireann a bhí ann agus bhí contae difriúil ag gach páiste. Thug mé ceithre sheachtain dóibh chun é a dhéanamh agus d’inis mé dóibh go mbeadh scéim marcála i gceist, go mbeadh gach duine ag déanamh cur i láthair ag an deireadh agus go mbeadh grád le fáil ag gach duine . At the beginning of this month, I gave some project work to each student in my class. It was projects on the counties of Ireland and each child was assigned a different county. I gave them four weeks to complete the project and I told them that there was a marking scheme, that each of them would present their work at the end and that everyone would be given a final grade. The entire project was to be done at home and we spent no school time on them. This is the marking scheme I gave them:

Cén fáth gur fiú na tionscnaimh seo a dhéanamh? // Why are these projects worthwhile?

  1. Is bealach iontach é na páistí a chur ag obair go neamhspléach. Cé go mbíonn tacaíocht agus b’fhéidir fiú beagán cabhrach ar fáil sa bhaile i gcás cuid dóibh, déanann siad tromlach na hoibre leo féin.It’s an excellent way to get the children working independently. While some of them will of course get support and maybe even a little help at home, they do the majority of the work by themselves.
  2. Is fiú iad a chur ag déanamh taighde, ar line nó sa leabharlann, agus an taithí a thabhairt dóibh ar eolas a bhailiú agus ansin a eagrú. It is a specific skill to be able to collect, summarise and translate (in the case of the Gaelscoileanna) information.
  3.  Is iontach an bealach é seo na páistí ag cur ag foghlaim faoi bhainistíocht ama. Le linn na míosa bhí mé ag meabhrú dóibh ar a laghad gach dara lá go raibh an tionscnamh le déanamh, ag ceistiú faoin bpróiséis, ag fiosrú cé mhéad oibre a bhí déanta acu agus ag cinntiú go bfhuil siad ag tabhairt faoin obair i bpíosaí beaga in ionad é ar fad a fhágáil go dtí an nóiméad deirneach. Mhínigh mé an seanfhocal seo dóibh – ‘Cuir gach rud ar an méar fhada agus sar i bfad beidh an méar fhada ró-ghearr’.It’s a fantastic way to allow the children to learn the importance of time management. During the month I was reminding them, at least every second day that they had project work to do, questioning them regarding how they were progressing, and checking that they were working in small, regular chunks rather than leaving everything to the last minute. I explained this proverb to them – ‘Put everything on the long finger and soon enough the long finger becomes too short’.
  4. Chomh maith le sin ar fad – cuireann sé go mór leis an bhfoghlaim atá ar siúl maidir leis an abhár áirithe atá i gceist. Sa chás seo, is tíreolas a bhí ann, ach d’fhéadfadh siad tionscnaimh ar dhéanamh ar ábhar staire, ábhar eolaíochta nó aon rud ar leith eile.On top of all that – it adds hugely to the learning on the particular subject matter. In this case it was geography but they just as easily be doing projects on historical or scientific subject matter, or anything else appropriate.

 

Bhí na tionscnaimh uilig go hiontach sa deireadh. Bhí go leor iarrachta curtha isteach ag na páistí ar fad agus bhí sé go hálainn an bród a fheicéail ar aghaidh gach duine acu. Bhí mé thar a bheith sásta leis an méad féinmhuiníne gur chruthaigh sé dóibh. Ghlac muid go leor pictiúir agus bhí maidin den chéad scoth againn. Seo cúpla sampla den obair a rinneadh.

The projects were all excellent in the end. The children put huge amounts of effort into them all and it was so lovely to see the pride on their faces. I was absolutely delighted with the amount of self-confidence the process created for them. We took lots of photos and had a fantastic morning. Here’s just a selection of the work.
