Leabhrán do na Rialacha Matamaitice // Maths Rules Booklets

2015-10-16 13.46.15

Bhí sé ag tarlú go raibh daltaí ag teacht chugam ag lorg cabhrach leis an mata agus go raibh mé ag scríobh rialacha agus samplaí dóibh ar ‘post-its’. Bhí cuid mhaith páistí á choinneáil na ‘post-its’ ina gcásanna pheann luaidhe agus ag baint úsáide astu arís is arís eile. Bhí siad ag titim as a chéile. Cinnte, bhí rud éigean breise de dhíth agus seo a chur mé le chéile. Is leabhrán simplí atá ann agus spás istigh ann chun nótaí a choinneál faoi rialacha sa mhata nó chun samplaí a leagadh amach. Uaireanta, molaim dóibh rudaí áirithe a bhreacadh síos ann, ach chomh maith le sin, tá smacht ag na páistí ar a gceann féin agus dá mbeadh rud éigean cabhrach dóibh féin, go pearsanta, roghníonn siad é a scríobh ann. Bíonn na leabhrán oscailte go minic acu i rith ceachta, ach go háirithe don mhata meabhrach. Úsáidtear iad don obair bhaile chomh maith. Tá na páistí is laige ó thaobh mhata de an-tógtha, ach go háirithe, leo.

Is féidir an leabhrán a cheannach anseo.

I noticed that my students were coming up to me looking for help with maths and I had been writing rules and examples for them on post-its. Many of the children were saving these post-its in their pencil cases and re-using them over and over again for help. They were falling apart. It was certain that something was needed to help and this is what I came up with. It’s a really simple booklet with spaces laid out to keep notes on maths rules or to lay out examples of calculations. Sometimes, I encourage the children to add specific things, but the children also control their own notebooks and often add items that are helpful, personally, to them. I see the notebooks open very often during maths lessons, especially in the case of mental maths. They also get a lot of use for homework. They’ve been a real hit with the weaker maths students, in particular.

You can purchase the booklet here.

Cluichí Cláir sa Seomra Ranga – na Buntáistí // Board Games in the Classroom – the Advantages

Creidim go mór gur fiú cluichí cláir a imirt sa seomra ranga, do gach aoisghrúpa. Sílim go bhfuil go leor buntáistí a théann lámh le lámh leo agus go gcuireann siad an fhoghlaim chun cinn i mbealach nach dtarlaíonn le straitéisí acadúla eile, ach atá díreach chomh tábhachtach. Spreagann siad foghlaim atá gníomhach agus comhoibritheach. Tá siad lán le deiseanna foghlama éagsúla agus baineann na páistí gach sult astu. Cén fáth nach mbeadh siad in úsáid againn már áis foghlama?

Fiú sna cluichí nár cuireadh le chéile díreach le bheith oideachasúil nó acadúil, tá go leor scileanna á chleachtadh ag páístí a imríonn, ar nós : comhaireamh, dathanna a aithint, litreacha a aithint, comhordú lámh is súl, scileanna mianluaileacha, cumarsáid ó bhéal, roinnt, seansanna a ghlacadh, agus rialacha a leanúint. Is buntáistí sóisialta agus acadúla a bhaineann leis na cluichí seo.

Seo cuid de na cluichí is fearr liom – ag tosú leis na cinn déanta ag Oxford Toys don seomra ranga sóisearach (go bhfios dom, ní ach ceann amháin dóibh atá aistruithe go Gaeilge go dtí seo) agus ansin ag bogadh go cinn gur bhreá linn uilig do na seomraí sinsearach.

I am a big believer in the use of board games in the classroom, for all age groups. I think there are many advantages that go hand in hand with them and they promote learning in a way that doesn’t always come with other academic strategies, but that is equally important. They encourage active and cooperative learning, are rich in learning opportunities and the children really enjoy them. What’s not to love?

Even in games which are not specifically designed to academically educational, children can foster and develop skills such as : grouping, counting, colour recognition, letter recognition, hand-eye cooridination, fine motor skills, verbal communication, sharing, turn taking, lengthening attention span and adhering to rules and boundaries. The benefits are both social and academic.

Here are some of my favourites – starting with the Orchard Toys ones in the Junior classroom (as far as I’m aware only one of these has been translated to Gaeilge so far) and moving to some classics for the Senior rooms.
