Chríochnaigh mé le déanaí ag tabhairt faoin úrscéal Béarla seo a léamh le Rang 6. Bhain siad uilig an-sult as agus mar sin, agus muid uilig ag cur leabharliostaí le chéile ag an am seo den bhliain, ní fhéadfainn gan é a roinnt libh. Scríofa ag D.A. O’Connor, is scéal suimiúil, nua-aimseartha é ‘The Custodian’ atá lán le rúndiamhair, greann agus teannas. Clúdaithe sa scéal ná an-chuid ábhar agus topaicí atá oiriúnach do pháistí ar an aois seo. San áireamh ná an cibearbhulaíocht, an dúlagar, sábháltacht idirlíne, fadhbanna clainne, fuadach agus go leor eile. Chomh maith leis sin tá gnéithe stairiúla ag baint leis an scéal agus go leor grinn. Bhí na daltaí i gcónaí ag súil leis an gcéad caibidil eile a léamh – fiú iad nach mbeadh de ghnáth díograiseach faoin léitheoireacht – agus ag druidim go deireadh an scéil bhí cuid mhaith dóibh théis léamh ar aghaidh sa bhaile.

I recently finished reading this English novel with my 6th class. They all thoroughly enjoyed it, and so as we are all compiling booklists at this time of the year, I felt I had to share it with you all. Written by D.A. O’Connor, ‘The Custodian’ is an interesting, modern story, that is filled with mystery, humour and suspense. The story covers many subjects and topics which are written to suit children of this age group. Included are, cyber-bullying, depression, internet safety, family problems, kidnapping and lots more besides. As well as this there are historical elements in the story and plenty of humour. My students were always looking forward to reading the next chapter – even those who normally wouldn’t be enthusiastic readers – and as we neared the end of the story, quite a few had read ahead at home.

Mar is eol dúinn uilig – tá sé tábhachtach go mbíonn leabhair suimiúl chun suim na bpáistí a choinneáil. Ach tá sé díreach chomh tábhachtach go mbíonn gníomhaíochtaí oiriúnacha agus fiúntacha bunaithe ar leabhar ionas gur féidir staidéar a dhéanamh air i gceart agus chun uasmhéadú a dhéanamh ar an bhfoghlaim. Tá leabhar oibre le dul leis an úrscéal seo atá thar barr. Gníomhaíochtaí éagsúla atá istigh ann bunaithe ar gach uile caibidil sa leabhar (23 caibidil atá ann san iomlán). Ceisteanna simplí faoin scéal, rudaí le phlé, díospóireachtaí, obair foclóra, taighde stairiúil, stiallchartúin le tarraingt, crossfhocail, cuardach focal, gníomhaíochtaí drámaíochta agus go leor eile.

As we all know well – it’s important that a book is interesting in order to keep the children engage. However, it is equally important that we engage them in suitable, meaningful activities based on the book so that they can study it properly and maximise learning. There is an excellent workbook which accompanies this novel. It contains various activities based on each individual chapter (there are 23 chapters in total). Simple comprehension question, discussion stimuli, debates, dictionary and word work, historical research projects, comic strips to draw, crosswords, wordsearches, dramatical activities and much more.

Seo an chéad bhliain go raibh na leabhair seo againn sa scoil. Tá siad foilsithe ag educate.ie agus cheannaigh muid 30 cóip ag tús na bliana. Tá an leabhair oibre ar an leabharliosta againn. Tá sé tábhachtach le rá nach bhfuair mé rud ar bith saor in aisce agus níl fiú a fhios ag na foilsitheoirí faoin léirmheas seo. Is mo thuairim féin, go pearsanta agus go profisiúnta atá anseo ina iomlán. Mholfainn an leabhar seo d’aon mhúinteoir Rang 6.

This is the first year that we’ve had this novel in the school. It’s published by educate.ie and we bought 30 copies at the beginning of the year. The workbook is on the 6th class booklist. It is important to say that I did not receive anything free of charge and the publisher is unaware of this review. This is entirely my own personal and professional opinion. I would recommend this book to any 6th class teacher.
