Bhíomar ag díriú isteach ar an aimsir sna hábhair uilig agus bhí siad an-tógtha leis an stáisiúin aimsire a chur le chéile. Is tionscnamh seo a rinne muid thar seachtain iomlán – níor tharla sé in aon ceacht amháin.

My 6th Class really enjoyed these SESE lessons a couple of weeks ago. We were focusing on the weather across all of the subjects and they were all very interested and involved in constructing this weather station. This was a project that we completed over the course of a week – it didn’t happen all in one lesson.

Ar an gcéad dul síos chuir mé iad ag obair i gcúig ghrúpa – cúigear nó seisear i ngach grúpa. Thóg muid amach na taibléidí agus thosaigh siad ag déanamh taighde. Cé go raibh muid i ndiadh plé ghairid a bheith againn – bhí orthu dul ag fiosrú céard a bhíonn in stáisiúin aimsire, cén fáth, cén bealach go n-oibríonn sé, agus dár ndóigh, cén chaoi ceann a dhéanamh. Bhí ionstraim aimsire ag gach grúpa. Bhí orthu liostaí a dhéanamh den fearas a bhí de dhíth acu, plean a dhéanamh agus an fearas a thabhairt isteach ar scoil – rud nó dhó le tabhairt isteach ag gach éinne. Don chuid is mó is rudaí simplí a bhí i gceist, rudaí a bheadh sa bhaile acu cheanna féin. An t-aon rud gur thóg mé isteach mé féin ná an alcól a bhí de dhíth don teirmiméadar.

Firstly, I organised them into five working groups – five or six students in each group. We took out the tablets and they began to research. Although we had engaged in a brief, general discussion previously – they needed to find out what a weather station consists of, why so, what way things work, and of course, how to make each element. Each group was assigned a different weather instrument. They needed to make lists of the equipment they needed, make a plan and then bring in the various equipment – one or two items each. For the most part it was simple items that were required, things that they would have at home already. The only thing that I brought in myself was the rubbing alcohol that was needed for the thermometer.

Then, they were able to begin designing and constructing the various instruments – following the instructions that they’d found themselves online. We soon had the following instruments :

Anenometer – This measures wind speed

Wind Vane – This measures wind direction

Raing Gauge – This measures rainfall levels

Barometer – This measures air pressure

Thermometer – This measures the air temperature

Chuir muid ár stáisiúin aimsire le chéile sa spás oscailte atá díreach taobh amuigh dár seomra ranga agus chuireamar lipéid ar na gnéithe éagsúla. Is féidir linn é a fheiceál ón bhfuinneog agus táimid faoi láthair á sheiceáil gach lá agus ag coinneáil taifid ar luas na gaoithe, treo na gaoithe, leibhéil báistí, brú aeir agus teocht aeir.

We put our weather station together in an open space just outside our classroom and we labelled the various elements. We can see it from the window and we are currently checking it daily and recording changes in wind speed, wind direction, rainfall levels, air pressure and air temperature.
