Slán le Rang 6 // Goodbye to 6th Class

graduation3‘Sé an am sin den bhliain arís – rudaí ag tosú ag druidim go críoch. Ach go háirithe d’éinne eile agaibh atá ag múineadh Rang 6 , is am sórt aisteach é. Níl na páistí cinnte an bhfuil siad ag iarraidh fanacht nó fágáil agus níl muid féin cinnte, dár ndóigh, an bhfuil muid ag súil le slán a rá agus iad a chur amach ar bhóthar an tsaoil, nó an b’fhearr linn iad a choinneáil linn ar feadh tréimhse eile. Tá caidreamh iontach agam leis an rang atá agam i mbliana agus táim lán cinnte go mbeadh deora an oíche sin, ag deireadh Mí an Mheitheamh – agus mo pheataí ag fágáil slán. Is rud nua go leor dúinne é seo, sa scoil ina bhfuil mé. Sin toisc go bhfuil an scoil théis a bheith ag fás agus ní raibh riamh níos mó ná deichniúr againn i Rang 6 – go dtí seo. Tá rang iomlán ag fágáil i mbliana. Shíl mé go mbeadh sé deas ár bplean don oíche a roinnt libh agus seans mhaith go mbeadh smaointe eile agaibhse go bhfuil taithí agaibh.

It’s that time of year again – and things are beginning to draw to close. Especially for any others of you teaching 6th Class, it’s a strange time. The children are unsure as to whether they want to stay or go and we ourselves aren’t sure, indeed, whether or not we’re glad to see them off on their life’s road, or whether we’d prefer to hold on to them for a little longer. I have a great relationship with the class I have this year and I’m absolutely certain that there’ll be tears that night, at the end of June – and my little pets saying goodbye. This is still a very new event for us, in the school I teach in. This is because the school has been growing and we have never had more than ten children in 6th class – until now. We have an entire class leaving this year. I thought it would be nice to share our plans for the night with you all, and I’m hopeful that some of you might have experience or ideas to share.

1. It will happen on one of the evenings during the last week of school. All of the children in 6th class will be invited, along with their parents and all of the teachers. They won’t have to wear their uniforms and it’s a chance for them all to dress up.

2. Beidh cur i láthair ghairid réidh ag an bpríomhoide. Labhróidh sí faoin stair atá ag na páistí seo sa scoil, eachtraí a tharla go gcuimhníonn muid orthu, agus beidh go leor griangrafanna againn a bhí glactha thar na blianta.

2. The principal will give a short presentation. She’ll speak about the children’s history in the school, events and incidents that we all remember and there will be plenty of photographs to show from over the years.

3. Fágfaidh muid na griangrafanna ar an scaileán fad is atá gach duine ag ithe. Beidh dinnéar agus milseog ag gach duine. Faigheann muid an bia isteach ó bhialann áitiúil agus eagraíonn Coiste na dTuismitheoirí daoine le chabhrú ar an oíche.

3. We’ll leave the photographs on the screen while everybody is eating. There’ll be dinner and dessert for everyone. We have the food brought in from a local restaurant and the Parent’s Committee organise for people to help serve it on the night.

4. Ansin, beidh seans ag gach páiste teacht suas ar an árdan. Idir mé féin agus an príomhoide, labhróidh muid faoi gach páiste chun iad a mholadh. Tá Gradaim le bronnadh orthu réidh againn, agus chomh maith le sin gheobhaidh gach duine dóibh t-léine, agus eochair USB ar a bhfuil na griangrafanna uilig agus ailt nuachtáin fuathu.

4. Then, we’ll call each child up onto the stage individually. Myself and the principal will talk about each of them to praise them. We have Awards ready to present them all with, and they will also each be given a t-shirt and a USB key containing all of their photos and the newspaper articles about them.

5. Roimh críoch a chur leis an oíche tá na páistí iad féin chun scannán ghairid a léiriú – déanta acu féin. Tá siad cheanna féin á phleanáil eatarthu féín! Beidh siad cinnte ag spriocadh as na múinteoirí éagsúla (i mbealach spraíúil dár ndóigh J) agus ag léiriú teachtaireachtaí faoin am a chaith siad linn.

5. Before the evening ends, the children are going to present a short video – that they’re making themselves. They’re already planning it among themselves! I’ve no doubt that they’ll be joking about the various teachers (in a playful way of course J) and leaving visual messages about the time they’ve spent with us.

Ba cheart go mbeadh tráthnóna álainn againn agus go mbeadh na páistí in ann a ngnóthachtálacha éagsúla a roinnt lena dtuismitheoirí chun iad a chéiliúradh i mbealach cáirdiúl, neamhfhiormiúl. Agus ag an deireadh thiar thall céard is féidir liom a rá? Beidh mé iontach brónach iad a fheiceáil ag imeacht……

It should be a lovely evening where the children can share their various successes with their parents and celebrate them in a friendly, informal way. And who am I kidding? I’ll be terribly sad to see them go……
